News & UpdatesChickens 101: Setting Up Your BrooderThe chicks are almost here! Prepare by setting up a brooder at least 24 hours in advance. October: United Cooperative's Equity Revolvement MonthWe celebrate a lot of things in the month of October here in the US. There are more than 120 different things recognized or celebrated during October, according to National Holidays and Observances. While some are well known, like Breast Cancer Awareness Month, others are much more obscure, like Toilet Tank Repair Month. As a cooperative, we historically celebrate October as National Co-op Awareness Month. Nationally, there is a new theme for Co-op Month every year, but at United Cooperative, our local theme has been the same for many years: equity revolvement. "Cooperatives Commit: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion"This fall, I am reminded of all the blessings we have, from the bounty of the up-coming harvest to the freedoms that have enriched this country and the privilege to serve our customers daily. 2020 certainly has not been a typical year as we still struggle with the events brought on by the coronavirus. But, even in this pandemic, we have seen people coming together to help the less fortunate. We salute the essential workers; the farmers, cooperative employees, truckers, medical professionals, police, first responders, and our grocery store workers. Thank you for all you do. Preparing Your Propane-Powered Home For WinterTemperatures are dropping, which means many homeowners are turning up the thermostat to heat their homes. For those who heat their homes with propane, preparation can help make for a safe and easy transition. Our Commitment to Quality AssuranceAt United Cooperative, we pride ourselves on service to our patrons. One aspect of this service is our commitment to quality assurance in the formulation, manufacture and delivery of feed products to our customers. We have established and continue to follow a testing and evaluation program to ensure all feeds sold match the formulation and nutrient specifications they were designed to meet. Use Our SMART Program to Visualize Your Field's Profitability Across Every AcreAs I write this article, it is interesting to look back over the past couple of years. We had two delayed seasons, mainly due to excessive moisture, followed by a more typical season. I’m hoping we can see higher test weights on corn this fall than we have the past two seasons. That’s why we offer the Cenex Total Protection Plan® Warranty, a comprehensive risk management tool for your operation that keeps you in the field and provides you peace of mind. Preparing for Harvest & 2020 Harvest PoliciesHarvest is just about here! Thankfully, it is expected to be much different than our last one. Last year we dealt with poor planting, growing and harvest conditions. Then, we had to find a place for all the beans as a result of a trade war. Now after nearly two years of China avoiding the purchase of U.S. commodities, they have been purchasing bushels nearly every day. That has brought a recent welcome rally to commodity prices. The government data, if correct, is telling us to expect one of our best crops in recent years - a welcomed change for all of us for sure. We do expect some areas to struggle some with space as this crop gets harvested. United Cooperative’s member-owned network has 70 million bushels of space coupled with some of the best receiving and conditioning equipment in the state. This allows your cooperative to get our members’ crop handled effectively. Credit RemindersUnited Cooperative offers input financing. Reduce Corn Silage Shrink with Good Forage ManagementWe often speak of corn silage yield from the standpoint of the crop being grown and harvested in the field. Now at harvest time we have a chance to increase or at least maintain, the yield potential of our corn silage. Good forage management that includes proper packing, inoculant and sealing corn silage with bunker covers and tires is key to reducing corn silage shrink and keeping it’s quality.
